UThukela District Municipality Mayor Cllr AS Mazibuko accompanied by EXCO Member and Chairperson for the Water & Technical Services portfolio committee Cllr MV Khumalo, Chief Whip Cllr S Dlungwane and Okhahlamba Local Municipality Cllr SR Mlambo introduced the sanitation project to the community of Sandlwana on Wednesday last week.
Once again, the people's dignity has been restored through proper sanitation facilities as it was promised to this community during the IDP Budget consultative meetings. The District Mayor reminded the people that the idea behind those IDP Budget meetings was to give people a chance to make inputs and comments in terms of their needs. He assured the audience that service delivery programmes have since started in some areas.
We are bringing this sanitation project here in Sandlwane today because it is our aim to restore people's dignity and hygienic environment as it is our duty to make sure that the community gets basic needs as mandated. The project we are bringing here will also create temporary job opportunities for the locals,
said the Mayor.
The Mayor further urged the community to work hand in hand with the service provider to get the job done in time. Cllr Mlambo and community members Sandlwana were grateful that the district has kept its promises they made during the consultative meetings. The community also thanked the Mayor for everything he and the Council do to develop the communities.
The contractor that will be undertaking the sanitation project is Lamalwa Trading. The project is envisaged to create about 20 temporary jobs for the locals. It is also expected to take up to 10 months to complete. An amount of over R 4 million has been allocated for the project which is envisaged to benefit about 531 households in this area.
Clean potable water and hygienic sanitation are all essential ingredients to ensure human health. Improving upon these services will bring economic gains while also helping to build resilience given increasing climate variability. We must always remember that sanitation improves the quality of life
