For the past three months the uThukela District Municipality has had several sewer pump stations being damaged and vandalised in Steadville, Ladysmith and Colenso areas. All the stations have been stripped off electrical cables for copper, cabling and motors. In Steadville, brand new pump station is still under refurbishment by Watersol after electrical cables were cut and removed. Currently the sewer pump station is not pumping at all.

In light of the outbreak of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Uthukela District Municipality is now implementing control and mitigation measures to prevent the occurrence and the spread of the virus in the district. The plan focuses on the control measures that will empower the staff of the municipality and the community at large with appropriate knowledge and skills that will assist them to protect themselves and also prevent the spread of the COVID-19.

REFURBISHMENT OF THE OLIPHANTSKOP LEADS TO PARTIAL SHUTDOWN
The Oliphantskop Dam is currently undergoing refurbishment which will lead to shutdown of the sand filters. The plant itself is operational but not at full capacity. As a result, the refurbishment of the existing infrastructure will have an effect on the supply of water to the communities of Waaihoek, Mabhekazi, Ekuvukeni, Uitvaal, portion of KwaHlathi and Ezihlabathini.

With all these factors in mind, uThukela District Municipality organised a Strategic Planning session over a two-day period from 05 to 06 March in Champaign Sports Resort under Okhahlamba municipality. The key success criterion to this strategic re-positioning was an organisational form that will enable UThukela District to deliver on its strategy and mandate.

UThukela District Municipality reached out to the communities on the Draft IDP Budget 2019/20 through public engagement conducted today. Two roadshows were held at ward 28 KwaShuzi and ward 25 Ntokozweni Community Hall in Colenso under Alfred Duma Local Municipality on Wednesday. The district municipality invited all the members of the public and Traditional Leaders to take part to the draft IDP and Budget process for the 2019/20.

The UThukela District Municipality Deputy Mayor Cllr NW Sibiya accompanied by Okhahlamba Local Municipality Cllr Vilakazi and Cllr Mfuphi and District officials on Tuesday delivered the Draft IDP & Budget Presentation 2019/20 to the first round of IDP to stakeholders in Bergville Sports Complex. This engagement was amongst the many initiatives made by government since the democratic dispensation.

Following the community protest that is currently taking place in Ekuvukeni with regards to service delivery and subsequent stakeholders meeting to mitigate the situation, uThukela District Municipality has appointed three service providers to undertake construction works in the area. This was announced during the stakeholders meeting that was held in the Alfred Duma satellite offices on Tuesday.

The Thuma Mina campaign took off and headed to KwaVala, Phasiwe and Wembezi areas under Inkosi Langalibalele municipality on Wednesday March 20 to address service delivery challenges. The Speaker Cllr PG Strydom led the team comprising the Ward Cllr Mgaga and officials who went to KwaVala to tackle specifically the issues of water and sanitation.

The drought situation around uThukela District Municipality is not getting any better as yet. The hot, dry and windy weather conditions have negatively impacted on a terrible drought situation faced by the district. With no rainfall in sight, the situation has prompted the municipality to intensify its water restrictions to manage water supply as we now do not have enough in our reservoirs.

Newly sworn in as the Speaker of uThukela District Municipality Cllr Phindile G Strydom holds one of the most important positions. Former Speaker Cllr DCP Mazibuko resigned about a month and cut ties as being politically involved as a leader. However, she stressed her loyalty to the ANC and emphasised the fact that her role would be more behind the scenes.

Cable theft and vandalism of water infrastructure on production boreholes in Peacetown (ward 15) and Watersmeet (ward16 and 18) resulted in a major interruptions on water distributions/ supply in most areas within the Driefontein Block. Upon routine inspections in Driefontein Block in the early hours of Saturday morning, it was discovered that the newly refurbished water pump and electric components and pumps have once again been vandalised and burnt. As a result the areas such as Peacetown and Watersmeet were severely affected.

UThukela District Municipality under the leadership of the Mayor Cllr AS Mazibuko reached out to the communities on the Draft IDP Budget 2018/19 through a series of public meetings that commenced from the 10th to the 13th of April 2018 across all three local municipalities. Two roadshows were conducted in each municipality per day respectively.
